Treatment
Alcohol Addiction Treatment in Tennessee
You do not need to decide whether you are "an alcoholic" before asking for help. A better question may be whether alcohol is beginning to cost you more than you want to keep paying.

Alcohol is the most widely used substance in the country, and it is also one of the most dangerous to stop without medical support. The line between heavy drinking and physical dependence can be crossed quietly — often without the person realizing it until they try to stop.
At The Lake, we work with people at every stage of that spectrum. Whether you are questioning your relationship with alcohol for the first time, or you have been struggling for years and are ready to do something different, this is a place where that conversation can happen privately, without judgment, and with real clinical support behind it.
Recognizing the signs
When drinking starts becoming a problem
There is no single moment when drinking crosses a line. It tends to happen gradually — and the signs are often easier to see in retrospect than in the middle of it.
Changes in how you drink
- —Drinking more than you intended, or for longer than you planned
- —Finding it difficult to stop once you start
- —Needing more alcohol to feel the same effect
- —Drinking earlier in the day, or alone
Changes in how you feel
- —Anxiety, irritability, or restlessness when you haven't had a drink
- —Difficulty sleeping without alcohol
- —Using alcohol to manage stress, grief, or emotional pain
- —Feeling ashamed or secretive about how much you drink
Changes in your life
- —Relationships becoming strained because of drinking
- —Work, responsibilities, or health beginning to suffer
- —Continuing to drink despite consequences you can see clearly
- —Trying to cut back and finding that you can't
If several of these feel familiar, that is worth paying attention to. You do not need to check every box to have a problem worth addressing.
Understanding dependence
What alcohol addiction can look like
Alcohol use disorder does not look the same in every person. Some people drink every day. Others drink heavily on weekends and stay sober during the week. Some function well at work and at home — until they don't. Some have lost nearly everything.
What most people with alcohol dependence share is this: the drinking has become something they feel they need, not just something they choose. Stopping feels impossible, or the attempt to stop brings on physical symptoms that are frightening enough to make them start again.
There is also often a layer of shame that makes it harder to ask for help. Many people spend years managing the problem privately — hiding how much they drink, minimizing it to themselves and others, making rules they can't keep. That isolation tends to make things worse.
If any of this sounds familiar, you are not unusual. And you are not beyond help.

Severity
When the situation may be more serious
For some people, alcohol dependence has progressed to a point where stopping without medical supervision carries real risk. Alcohol withdrawal is one of the few withdrawal syndromes that can be life-threatening — including the possibility of seizures and a condition called delirium tremens, which requires immediate medical attention.
This is not meant to frighten you. It is meant to be honest about why the right kind of support matters, and why attempting to stop on your own — particularly after years of heavy daily drinking — is not always safe.
If you are unsure how serious your situation is, a conversation with our clinical team can help you understand what level of care is appropriate. That call is free, confidential, and carries no obligation.
Medical detox
Do I need alcohol detox?
Medical detox is typically recommended when the body has become physically dependent on alcohol. You may need supervised detox if any of the following apply:
- —You drink daily, or nearly every day
- —You have experienced shaking, sweating, or nausea when you stop
- —You have had a seizure related to alcohol withdrawal in the past
- —You feel physically unwell — anxious, shaky, or sick — within hours of your last drink
- —You have tried to stop before and found the physical symptoms overwhelming
Detox at The Lake
Our medical detox program is managed by board-certified physicians and nursing staff around the clock. You are monitored continuously, kept comfortable, and supported through every stage of the physical process — in semi-private suites with private suites available, not a clinical ward.
Detox at The Lake is not a standalone service. It transitions directly into residential treatment, so the clinical relationship you build during detox continues through the rest of your stay.
Other levels of care
What if I don't need detox?
Not everyone who struggles with alcohol requires medical detox. If your drinking has not reached the point of physical dependence — or if you have already safely stopped and are looking for support in staying stopped — residential treatment may be the right starting point.
Our residential program addresses the psychological, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of alcohol use. Individual therapy and group therapy are part of the treatment experience, alongside experiential, mindfulness, and spiritually informed approaches. The environment itself — 105 acres of Tennessee lakefront — is part of that process.
Our clinical team will assess your situation carefully and recommend the level of care that makes sense for where you are. There is no pressure to accept more than you need, and no reason to accept less.

For families
Helping someone you love
Watching someone you care about struggle with alcohol is its own kind of exhaustion. You may have tried to help in every way you can think of. You may be unsure whether to say something or stay quiet. You may be carrying a level of worry that has become its own problem.
We work with families as well as individuals. Our admissions team can speak with you confidentially — about what you are seeing, what options exist, and how to have a conversation with your loved one that might actually land. You do not need to have everything figured out before you call.
If the person you are concerned about is willing to speak with us directly, we can take it from there. If they are not ready yet, we can help you understand what to do in the meantime.
Our approach
Alcohol treatment at The Lake
The Lake is a private residential retreat on 105 acres of Tennessee woodland and lakefront. We accept a small number of clients at a time — by design. The ratio of staff to clients is high. The environment is quiet. The work is serious.
Alcohol treatment here is not a program you move through on a schedule. It is a clinical relationship built around your specific history, your specific needs, and what a sustainable life without alcohol actually looks like for you.
We address the physical dimension of alcohol dependence through medically supervised detox when needed. We address the psychological and emotional dimensions through individual therapy, psychiatric care, and group work that draws on experiential, mindfulness, and spiritually informed approaches. And we address the practical dimension — what happens when you leave — through individualized aftercare planning that begins before your discharge.
